In the movie version of Shakespeare’s Henry V (1944), legendary actor Sir Laurence Olivier, wearing a full suit of armor, is hoisted into his saddle by a crane.

So it must be true, because filmmakers are hardly going to get such a huge historical detail wrong, are they?

★ And the truth is...

If armor were so heavy that a knight couldn’t climb onto a horse, then it would be too heavy to fight in too.

Back in Henry V’s day, armor-clad knights simply popped a foot in the horse’s stirrup and hoisted their other leg over the saddle, exactly how people usually get onto a horse. They didn’t need a crane to help them.

The crane confusion seems to have begun during the late nineteenth century, possibly as a joke. And even though a top historian objected to the use of the crane in Henry V, he was ignored.
